49ers blast through day one of Kiel Week

Kieler Woche - Team GBR - 49ers blast through day one of Kiel Week
KIEL, GERMANY-(22-6-2005) The opening day of the Kiel Regatta was bathed in sunshine and warm temperatures.  Racing kicked off at 14.00 hours with shifty 11-14 knot winds on the Kiel Fiord.

In the 49er, Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks had a solid performance.  Scoring a 3,1,1 the pair finished the day at the top of the fleet.  Draper commented “Simon and I are really enjoying being back in the boat and are just having a lot of fun.  We have managed to get in a bit more practice since the Holland Regatta and today it paid off.  We look forward to racing again tomorrow.”

Also back in good form in the 49er are Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes.  In May, the pair took home the gold at the Holland Regatta and today proved they haven’t lost their touch.  Finishing in second just behind Draper and Hiscocks, Morrison and Rhodes will have their sights set on sailing consistently again tomorrow.

Opening day was also a success for Laser sailor Paul Goodison.  With two seconds and a first place Goodison, is only one point behind the leader Robert Scheidt of Brazil.  “Today was a good day,” Goodison explained “I had the right boat speed and I got off the starting line well.  I was overtaken in the first race but I used that as my motivation to sail faster and better in the following races.”

Helena Lucas sailing in the 2.4m also had a notable performance.  Finishing 1,3,1, Lucas is currently in gold medal position.

The event continues through to Sunday 26 June.  Further information can be found on the event website www.kieler-woche.de.
